870 vs Mossberg

The Remington 870 is arguably the finest pump action shotgun in the world. Produced continually since 1950 the 870 is inexpensive, reliable in the extreme. Depending on the intended use more practical accessories are offered for this weapon than any other shotgun on the market.

If the primary use is as a home defense weapon, I recommend an extended magazine tube that allows 2 more rounds for an 18 inch barrel and 3 more rounds for a 20 inch barrel over the standard 4 round magazine. I prefer the Choat extension, spring and orange high visibility follower over the Remington product, finding the extension smoother and easier to install and remove. I find the Remington spring to be much too strong, so much so that many people have trouble loading the magazine fully. I have actually seen the pressure from that spring cause ammunition to shorten and bulge, causing them not chamber when left in the gun for extended periods of time. Some people will say the weapon was left loaded too long and they are right, but the fact still remains the spring is excessively strong and a lot of people will leave their weapons loaded for long periods of time.

Rifle sights on the barrel are an absolute necessity for the accurate use of slugs. Shotgun slugs can be quite accurate up about 75-100 yards for the taking of deer and other large critters. Additionally, rifle sights provide a level sight plain that works much like a ventilated rib allowing faster, more accurate shot placement. A bead front sight will work but without a vent rib, it generally causes the operator to shoot high.
